You could say, “Here finally, we get the long-awaited sequel to Ghost of Tsushima.” For sure, this was a huge surprise for every gamer in the form of Ghost of Yotei-an amazing sequel to Ghost of Tsushima-announced during Sony’s State of Play event on September 24, 2024. And since then, the fans have remained super hyped; here is everything you need to know. Here is all we know so far about Ghost of Yotei, from settings to its storyline and new features.
A New Hero and Setting
The most interestingly new change in Ghost of Yotei is the new protagonist that it brings along. Gone is Jin Sakai, the protagonist of the first game; instead, this sequel brings along Atsu, a forceful and very strong female warrior. Unlike Jin, who fought in the island of Tsushima, Atsu’s story takes place at the northernmost region in Japan around Mount Yotei, otherwise known as present-day Hokkaido. Shifting to a new location would bring a whole new experience for players with breathtaking landscapes full of snow, large grassy fields, and great views.
Ghost of Yotei takes place 300 years after Jin’s journey in the original game, more precisely in 1603. Unlike the more organized samurai clans of Tsushima, the lands around Mount Yotei were filled with rogue ronins, exiled samurai, and folks running from their pasts. That sets it, then, in a different, semi-lawless environment compared to Tsushima alone, which is exciting for players to dive into.

An Exciting New Story
Although most of the details are not known about Atsu’s journey, the trailer gives some hints toward what might have been the story. A mysterious voice says during the reveal that people come to the North of Japan “to disappear,” but it sounds like Atsu is searching for something-or maybe someone. As the trailer would suggest, she may not be alone in her search, with what seems to be numerous ronins on the hunt for her. Of course, this is where an adventure filled with mystery, danger, and exploration sets in.
New Gameplay Features
Ghost of Yotei does seem to include some new exciting gameplay features within the series. The trailer showed Atsu fighting with a katana, much like Jin, but she also fights with more traditionally Japanese armament, such as the kusarigama-a weapon that’s akin to a nunchuck with a blade attached to it. What’s even more surprising is the introduction of firearms-firearms being something we haven’t seen in the series before. This makes perfect sense given that the game is set in 1603, a period when the use of firearms became more commonplace.
As a whole, the fighting looks more dynamic than ever, and it is going to be interesting to see these new weapons and mechanics mix with the iconic sword fighting of this game. The graphics and visuals have also gotten an entire upgrade in Ghost of Yotei, which is Sucker Punch’s first game entirely developed for the PlayStation 5.
Release Date and Platforms
For now, Ghost of Yotei is slotted for 2025. While there is no exact date today, fans can know it will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive upon release. Just like Ghost of Tsushima, however, it’ll more than likely make its way to PC in due time. For now, this beautiful open-world adventure is one that PlayStation 5 owners can look forward to in the near future.
