DayZ – You might be cut more frequently than you realise. Zombies attack, gunfire breaks out or you rub against a sharp something or another and a cut is always just around the corner. If you do not react, blood loss can result in unconsciousness or possibly losing life too as a person. So, how do you handle it?
DISEASE
Let’s start with diseases – Here is a list of the diseases and their cures.
1. Cholera– Unsafe drinking water that originates from ponds, lakes or among others improperly treated bottled water — both spread cholera. Tetracycline tabs are required to cure cholera. The best method to prevent cholera is to disinfect water using chlorine tablets before drinking.
2. Food poisoning– This is mostly caused by eating uncooked or spoiled food and somehow related to having dirty hands. Activated charcoal tablets are a good remedy for food poisoning. Avoid cooked or processed food and maintain hygiene. Player main focus should be on consuming cooked or processed food by maintaining all hygienic precautions.
3. Cold– Your character can catch a cold by staying in cold temperatures or from other sick players. Tetracycline can cure it. Keep warm and avoid sick survivors.
4. Flu– If you ignore that cold, it might turn into the flu. Again, Tetracycline is your go-to medicine. Same rules apply – stay warm and avoid the sniffling masses.
5. Infected Wound– Used a dirty bandage? That’s a recipe for infection. Once more, Tetracycline comes to the rescue. To prevent this, always disinfect your medical supplies. Look for items labeled as sterilised – that means they’re safe to use.
How do you know if you’re sick? Watch out for these symptoms:
– Blurred vision
– Coughing and sneezing
– Vomiting
– Shaking
– Painful groans
Vomiting, it’s especially bad because it drains your food faster. To counter this make sure you eat and drink bit by bit at a time. It’s like when you’re sick in real life – you don’t want to overdo it.
Oh, and here’s a super important tip: never, ever eat human flesh in DayZ. It might seem like a good idea when you’re starving, but trust me, it’s not. It’ll give you a disease called prion disease that has no cure and makes your character randomly speak out loud.
DEALING WITH CUTS
Cuts are super common in DayZ. Depending on how bad they are, you could lose a little blood or a lot. Losing too much blood is bad news – you’ll pass out and eventually die if you don’t treat it.
To stop bleeding, use bandages, rags, or a sewing kit. But be careful! If you use dirty medical supplies, you might get an infection. Alcohol tincture, iodine tincture, or disinfectant spray will help you to disinfect your stuff.
Scout the area before you try to patch yourself up as you will be immobilised for a bit. You don’t want to get jumped by a zombie while you’re in the middle of bandaging!

RECOVERING FROM BLOOD LOSS
Even after stopping the bleeding, losing a lot of blood can leave you weak. If your blood drops too low, your screen will lose colour, and you’ll have a harder time spotting enemies or navigating the environment. Here’s how you can speed up blood recovery:
- Eating and drinking: Keep your character well-fed and hydrated to regenerate blood naturally. It’s slow but steady.
- Saline solution: For faster recovery, combine a saline bag with an IV start kit to create a saline solution. This will not only help regenerate blood but also hydrate you.
For severe blood loss cases, a player might need to donate blood to you. However, remember that both the recipient and the donor should have compatible blood types. Therefore, check it using a blood test kit. After ascertaining compatibility, use a blood collection kit to draw the donor’s blood and then combine this with an IV Start Kit to create the transfusion.Make use of the table below as a guide.
MANAGING PAIN AND BROKEN LIMBS
The more hurt you are in DayZ, the slower you’ll move. That’s bad news when you’re trying to escape danger. Luckily, there are some items that can help:
Codeine – This is pretty common and helps a little with pain. You can use it several times.
Morphine Auto-Injector – These are rare but work great for pain. They let you move normally for a short time. Save these for when you really need to run after a fight.
Epinephrine Auto-Injector -This is like an adrenaline shot. It can wake up unconscious players or give you unlimited sprint for a short time if you use it on yourself.
Splint – It is required for damage-type fractures. If your player has a splint, they will be unable to sprint or jump. You can bundle together short sticks or rags/bandages to make splints.
In addition, as a precautionary measure, players will also be required to take vitamin tablets to strengthen their immune system. It aids whatever medicine is taken and dramatically speeds up recovery, Vitamin tablets are used to work alongside every other medicine.
WHERE TO FIND HEALTH ITEMS
Bandages are effective for closing wounds, but players can also use rags and sewing kits.
Rags are crafted by combining clothing with a blade and can also be made into basic items like face masks and gloves. Sewing kits are mainly for repairing clothes but can also stitch wounds; you’ll find these in households.
Bandages are often found in hospitals, clinics, and military installations. Medications are particularly plentiful at army bases situated on the mainland. Keep an eye out for these health items to stay in good shape!
